Bone Densitometry
Bone densitometry, or a bone density test, uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. The test determines whether an individual has osteoporosis or is at risk for developing osteoporosis (a disease that causes bones to become fragile and more likely to break). Bone density testing is primarily used for:

• Identifying decreases in bone density
• Determining an individual's risk for broken bones (fractures)
• Confirming a diagnosis of osteoporosis
• Monitoring osteoporosis treatment

The higher the bone mineral content, the denser the bone. Denser bones are stronger and generally less likely to break.
